Dismal Swamp Canal
The Dismal Swamp Canal, opened in 1805, connects the Pasquotank River in North Carolina and the Elizabeth River in Virginia and is the oldest operating artificial waterway in the US. The canal is host to nearly 2,000 pleasure boats every year and has provided transportation between NC and VA for over 200 years.
 
Dismal Swamp Canal Trail
The trail is recognized as part of the NC Birding Trail, a National Recreation Trail and the East Coast Greenway.  Begin on the southern end of the Welcome Center/State Park complex off US Hwy 17.
 
Fort Branch Civil War Site
A significant Civil War site overlooking the Roanoke River.  Fort Branch is the best-preserved earthwork fortification east of the Mississippi.
 
Historic Halifax
 
Officially recognized in 1867, when it was entered into court records as a school for Jarvisburg’s African American Students, making it the oldest African American school in North Carolina.

Somerset Place State Historic Site
Antebellum plantation offering an insightful view of life before the Civil War. It is one of North Carolina’s most significant African American (African-American) heritage sites.  One of the many sites on the Historic Albemarle Tour.
