Hobgood County Church Museum

Built by a tavern owner to satisfy his wife's desire for a "meeting house." When Hobgood was incorporated and a lot donated for a Methodist Church, the church was moved by mules pulling it over logs a few feet each week. Sunday services were wherever the church happened to be that week.

Originally a Methodist Church meeting house in Old Hobgood, was built in the early 1880's verified by newspaper articles and church history. This church has been moved 3 times and currently serves as a Country Church Museum in Hobgood. It plays host to 5th Sunday song services, special church services, weddings, and bible studies.

This structure was built by an old tavern owner in Old Hobgood to satisfy his wife's desire for a "meeting house." When Hobgood was incorporated and a lot donated for a Methodist Church, the church was moved by mules pulling it over logs a few feet each week. Sunday services were wherever the church happened to be that week. Once in its new location in Hobgood, members gathered on wooden pews with a wood heater. A steeple was added. The church was filled with song and stories of Jesus. Many children found a home with Christ in this church over the years. When the congregation outgrew the building, it was moved across the street and used for storage.

In 2004, the Hobgood Methodist Church purchased the building from Mr. & Mrs. Joe Bland and donated it to Hobgood Revitalization Committe raised funds and moved it to its current location in the heart of Hobgood.

The architecture is typical of the period using hand hewed boards and high piched ceiling. Much of the original structure remains. The foundation is made of bricks from another Methodist Church of the same circa which had been torn down. This church building is located on Highway 125 (Commerce Street) in Hobgood just behind the fountain in Friendship Park.

A key to the County Church Museum is available during regular business hours of the Hobgood Town Office for a self-guided tour. Special arrangements with specific times and dates can be made for guided tours by scheduling with Mr. Doug Speight, the curator, in advance.

This beautiful church is fully restored. There are pieces of its history displayed throughout. Musical groups have found the acoustics to be superior. The setting is in a quaint, lovey park with a fountain, benches, and gardens.

Hobgood is an old railroad town with a restored depot that host monthly prize BINGO and monthly musical entertainment located in the common complex. Tourist come for a Fourth of July fireworks celebration and an annual Cotton Festival the second Saturday in October. Hobgood Academy hosts visitors from the entire coastal plains at sporting events.
